When you hear musical, you won't immediately think of Jesus. It was not for nothing that Jesus Christ Superstar was not an everyday production. But musicals come in all shapes and sizes. When it comes to The Life of Jesus, Ria van Buuren prefers to talk about a choral work. Together with composer André Pouwer she took the plunge to sketch the life of the Messiah in a different way.
In The Life of Jesus, various main characters from His life are discussed. For Ria, one stood out when writing the songs. For the lyrics, I tried to empathize with her in a song like Mary at the Cross; what was going on in her mind at that moment. That became a moving song for me. For the lyrics, I drew from both the Bible and what came from myself. In that respect, I also gave myself the freedom to write.
