Yet Abraham Lincoln's short speech, delivered as a dedication of a national cemetery, is world-famous. It provides an explanation and reflection on the then-not-yet-ended civil war and names the values that would later become the cornerstone of American society: a people who, thanks to the sacrifice of others, can live in freedom and thus govern themselves as a country under God's care.
